度母的信仰在古印度時代就非常的流行，包括從那爛陀大學遺跡所出土的佛菩薩像中，有很多就是度母像，現在的菩提伽耶大覺塔上，還是保留雕刻著度母像。在漢傳佛教中，度母被視為觀世音菩薩的其中壹尊，或從觀世音菩薩目光所化現的女性菩薩，而稱為“多羅觀自在菩薩”或獨稱“多羅菩薩”。
